Dear Gary,
It is my pleasure to express to you and your colleagues my experience
with the SuperSlow program. I have had a 3-year history of intermittent
low back pain. When I was younger, it was limited to acute episodes of
self-limited spasm. Since my mid-thirties, I have had chronic stiffness
along with more frequent episodes of spasm. Since I have always been athletic,
it was not for lack of overall conditioning. In fact, I was all the more
frustrated because my activities were being limited by pain. When my neck
and upper back became painful and stiff, I decided to seek alternatives
to the anti-inflammatory medicines and regular physical therapy modalities.
My first two months of the program were beneficial in and of themselves.
I felt stronger and experienced less pain overall. However, I was still
tenuous at times because I was doing martial arts that perpetuated some
of the pain. I took a long hiatus from martial arts and eventually began
the SuperSlow on my own at your facility. Two months ago I restarted my
martial arts training and am happy to report no increase in pain or stiffness
to date. I can conclude from this two things: First, that two months may
be only the minimum time needed for recovery for certain conditions, and
secondly, that resting from the irritating activities while strengthening
oneself for an eventual return to them can be a viable option.
As a physician, I am excited about this approach to care of the back.
It works and appears safe when monitored appropriately. Additionally,
there are other benefits, such as general conditioning and weight control,
as well as even some emotional stabilization such as can also be achieved
in aerobic exercise. The exercises can be modified for people with underlying
medical or orthopedic conditions; indeed, my own patellofemoral syndrome
was in no way affected because of adjustments we made to some of the equipment.
The patients whom I have referred to you for the SuperSlow program have
to date all reported improvement in their back pain and are motivated
to continue to exercise. Would that all of my patients be so compliant!
Thank-you for your expertise, and for making your equipment available
to me to continue to train.
