Gary's Book Picks

Many people ask me about books that I would recommend for further reading, so I have started to compile a list. I have personally read each of these titles and my comments are included.

For your convenience, each title is linked to Amazon.com so that you can order them easily.

Ellington Darden: Living Longer Stronger

Living Longer Stronger: The 6-Week Plan to Enhance & Extend Your Years over 40
Ellington Darden, Ph.D.

  • In my opinion - a best buy. Well written, easy to read, answers lots of questions.
  • Emphasis on strength. An advocate of the SuperSlow protocol by Ken Hutchins. Gives Ken lots of credit for his expansion of the SuperSlow methodology of high intensity exercise.
  • Covers everything from nutrition, removing body fat and understanding strength training basics.
  • GRADE: Excellent for all ages
Ellington Darden: Body Defining

Body Defining: Drop Pounds, Firm Flab & Maximize Lean Muscle Lines in Just Six Short Weeks
Ellington Darden, Ph.D.

  • Well written - easy to read and understand. Probably the best book out at the present time for women.
  • Emphasis is on strength training. Dr. Darden is a strong proponent of SuperSlow and gives guidelines for correct repetition times.
  • Gives some good hints on nutrition and long term maintenance.
  • GRADE: Highly recommend for women.
Super Slow : The Ultimate Exercise Protocol

Super Slow : The Ultimate Exercise Protocol
Ken Hutchins

  • Technique manual for learning the Superslow® Protocol and proceeding to certification.
  • Philosphy of Mr. Hutchins in relationship to Aerobics, plyometrics, etc.
  • GRADE: Technical--much deeper reading--Expaining Superslow throughly. Required for certification.
Strength Training Past 50 (Ageless Athlete Series)

Strength Training Past 50 (Ageless Athlete Series)
Wayne Westcott, Ph. D.

  • A very complete book on general exercise. Dr. Westcott is a Ph.D. in exercise physiology and correlates many of his ideas and thoughts in this book. In fact, he did the studies on SuperSlow showing you can almost double your strength by using the SuperSlow protocol on a 15 second repetition cycle.
  • Emphasis is on strength. This is not for runners or other aerobic enthusiasts. Excellent book for men and women over 50.
  • GRADE: Excellent for those who want to get a little deeper into the physiology of exercise.
