Subject: Study shows strength training is safe for people with fibromyalgia.

Thanks to Mary, one of my students, I have access to a study from researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

"The important message of this study is that strength training is safe for people with fibromyalgia. Strength training can be an important part of an overall fitness program," says researcher Daniel Rooks, Director of the Be Well Tanger Center for Health Management at Beth Israel.

Though aerobics and flexibility exercises have long been prescribed for those with fibromyalgia, doctors have not encouraged strength training because of fears it would worsen symptoms or cause injury. In this 20 week program of weight training combined with flexibility and cardiovascular exercise, the 15 women involved showed increases in strength and endurance without causing injury. The program also improved symptoms such as fatigue, pain, stiffness and related depression and anxiety.

Rooks says, "Use proper technique and good posture to benefit most from strength training and avoid injury. Seek guidance from a physical therapist or fitness professional who understands the limitations of people with fibromyalgia."

Comments: This is good news! I’ve known this for the past two years but it takes a study to convince the medical community. If you have questions, and I’ll get back to you.
